A little about us:

Marcia and I are the fifth generation to live here on the Shafer Farm.  The oak trees out front were planted from acorns in 1892 by my Great Great Grandmother.  In my early years our farm produced grapes for both wine and raisins as well as peaches and nectarines.  I have many fond memories as a child growing up on the farm.  We lived in a small farmhouse built by my late Uncle Jack, whom I was named after.  Grandpa's home was just down the road 100 yards or so on our farm.  The street out front that is so busy today was a much slower country road when we were young.  Summers were spend playing playing in the sheep pasture between our houses, riding our bikes back and forth on the road, or roaming the fields and vineyards.  Many summer days during my pre-teen years were spent down at Grandpa's working alongside him with different chores and projects.  Whether rebuilding a broken-down pig pen (Grandpa raised pigs, chickens, pigeons, and sheep), or holding sheep while Grandpa and the vet doctored them; it alwasy felt good working alongside Grandpa when he "needed" help.  It wasn't until I was in my late teens that Dad told me that Grandpa created many of those projects because he wanted things to do alongside me.  Memories of those times still warm my heart and bring me joy.

Marcia and I have known each other since we were in kindergarten.  We were friends through school our school years becoming best friends in High School.  Marcia and I were married in 1973 and we moved away from the farm for several years.  As Dad grew older, he saw no family members showing an interest in taking over farming our land.  In the 1980's I left my HVAC business and Marcia, and I moved home where I farmed alongside Dad.  I cherish those years working alongside him.

I had the feeling I was perpetuating the legacy on this small farm that was created and passed down through the generations, through Dad and now through me.  Dad and Mom always wanted to be able to live out their lives on the farm as the generations before them had.  I made a commitment that I would do my best to honor that wish for them.  As the years passed by it became increasingly difficult for small farms such as ours to remain a viable business.  Marcia worked off the farm for decades which helped us through some tough and lean years.  Our love for and committment to each other has carried us through many challenges in our lives.  I am so thankful for Her love and faithfulness that has strengthened me through some of my most critical life circumstances.

Mom and Dad each got their wish and were able to live out their lives here on the farm, each passing away peacefully in the house they called Home.  With Mom and Dad gone, our son Kevin making the wise decision not to farm, and with Marcia and I now entering our retirement years; the time has come for us to start a new chapter in our life's journey. I am going to continue to pursue my love of woodworking when we move to  Colorado.
